Why your deodorant is toxic and how to transition to non-toxic version

Updated: Oct 18

Antiperspirants contain a number of different toxic chemicals/metals which are harmful to our health. They act as a nerve poison in order to stop us from sweating which is a normal bodily function. Aluminum is one of the ingredients in all antiperspirants and is responsible for stopping sweating by blocking the pores.

Aluminum is a heavy metal that throws the body out of balance and is known to be capable of both “DNA alterations and epigenetic effects” and has been linked to a number of chronic diseases including breast cancer where one study commented, “frequent use of underarm cosmetics products (UCP) may lead to an accumulation of aluminum in breast tissue. More than daily use of UCPs at younger ages may increase the risk of breast cancer”. It has also adverse effects to the brain with particulars of aluminum seen in the brains of those with Alzheimer’s and cognitive issues.

If the aluminum didn’t scare you off well, they also contain these other toxins parabens, phthalates, triclosan, Diethanolamine (DEA), synthetic fragrance, talc, propylene glycol, and silicone-derived emollients like dimethicone. These have their own issues and impacts to the body.

Also food for thought - sweating does not create body odor. Body odor is the combination of sweating and bacteria. Therefore, bad body odor can result from accumulation of toxins in the body. Therefore, your answer is to detox and remove the toxins from your body, it isn't purely an antiperspirants issue.

HOW TO TRANSITION AWAY FROM TOXIC DEODORANTS

1. You have to detox out your old toxic antiperspirant first

One of your main detoxifying mechanisms is via your skin including sweating. So firstly, you will sweat more in order to detox out your old deodorant (mainly the aluminum in your pores) and once you make the switch and your body then gets used to your non-toxic deodorant you will then sweat less! How long this may take you might ask – from 2-4 weeks.

2. You can help the detox process along – Pit Clay Mask

So the good news is you can help this along by doing a pit clay mask. You can do this every day while you detox or once a week.

PIT CLAY MASK RECIPE

Ingredients:

1 tbsp bentonite clay

1 tsp apple cider vinegar (can replace with more water if you would like)

1-2 tsp of water

Process:

Mix all the ingredients with a wooden spoon and spread over armpits and let it sit for 10-20 minutes. Rinse off in the shower or a washcloth.

3. Yes you will sweat and no it's not a bad thing

Antiperspirant containing aluminum clogs your pores and therefore makes you stop sweating but this isn’t natural. You are supposed to sweat! Stopping any naturally occurring bodily function is not good for your health in general. Once you detox out (number 2 above) the toxic products you will actually sweat less. So it is a process and you have to be patience. If you ask me four weeks of potentially smelling bad and having to do a mask is worth your future health.
