Tips for finding your Christmas Balance

Updated: Oct 18

Did you know that the average person in the United Kingdom will consume in excess of over 12,000 calories on Christmas and Boxing Day alone. That is 5-6 days worth of calories in just two days. I know, everybody loves Christmas dinner and all the trimmings, that’s all part of the day! But why not try mixing it up a little; have a mixture of roast potatoes and sweet potato chips and try the tips below.

Don’t starve yourself until Christmas Lunch or Dinner

Making healthy decisions in the morning will allow you to continue to make them throughout the day. Also, if you are satisfied from breakfast we you let less at lunch

Eat fruit

Don’t forgot your minimum 5 a day during Christmas, eating fruit makes you feel healthy, love your body and fills you up. People often forget about fruit at Christmas so rather than grabbing the snacks on the table or desert grab an apple.

Try not the snack

Snacking is where it gets you are Christmas from the cheese board to the pigs in a blanket. If you avoid the snacking, you can focus on the lunch/dinner and doesn’t add unnecessary and mindless calories.

Fill your plate with vegetables

Fill you plate and your stomach with all the vegetables. Cook lots of vegetables and include different types across all the colours of the rainbow. Having a good serving of vegetables will add vitamins, minerals and fibre and help you towards your five a day, but beware vegetables that come with added butter, cheese sauce or salt.

Easy on the alcohol

Try the classic one for one, one glass of alcohol (if you need one) and then a glass of water or a tea. This is great because alcohol increases your appetite and diminishes your ability to control what you eat. Also, remember excessive alcohol consumption can lead to serious health problems, including liver disease. The recommended units is 14 units per week (e.g. 6 beers, 6 glasses of red wine), not in one day!

Don’t sit down all day

Go out for walks or walks between sittings. Family walks are good and clear the mind, make you feel better and then you are not constantly around food.

Christmas doesn’t have to be a step backwards in your health journey, it is just another day and it is more about friends and family than the food.

Don’t forget to take your supplements

Take your supplements in the morning along with a good breakfast to make sure you start the day well. This will help your body prepare for Christmas lunch/dinner.

Stay hydrated

It is recommended you drink 6-8 glasses of water a day, this is easy to forget at Christmas so remember to take a water bottle and track you are still getting this in.

Merry Christmas and all the best!
